Khodorkovsky Victim of International Politics?

Khodorkovsky The trial of Russian tycoon Mikhail Khodorkovsky, though it could have remained a mostly internal, Russian, affair, has spilled over to the arena of international politics.

As the proceedings of the oligarch’s second trial are under way in Khamovnichesky Court in Moscow, the world’s press is following this trial as if it was, according to one of Khodorkovsky’s lawyer Robert Amsterdam, “of immense importance because of what it will say to us all about where Russia is going”. Amsterdam may be right in part – the trial and the proceedings will clearly help shed light on Russia’s judiciary – but he is not disclosing the whole picture.

Demjanjuk facing Germany charges

 Alleged Nazi war criminal John Demjanjuk is in jail in Munich, facing charges of being an accessory to the deaths of 29,000 Jews in World War II.

The frail 89-year-old arrived in Germany on Tuesday morning after being deported from the US.

Steinhauers to file new charges in Kovačević case

KovacevicBryan Steinhauer’s family, unhappy with the USD 1mn paid to them by Serbia, will be filing additional charges against Miladin Kovačević, says a Belgrade daily.

Shortly after the payment from Belgrade, the family filed new claims in New York for damages of a material and non-material nature not only for Bryan Steinhauer himself, the victim of Kovačević’s alleged assault, but also for his parents Richard and Marlene.

Moldovan President Vladimir Voronin has been elected as speaker of parliament

 Mr Voronin, of the ruling Communist Party, is due to step down as president as he has served the maximum two terms.

He called for reconciliation with opposition parties, after bitter divisions over the recent parliamentary election erupted into street violence.

Sri Lanka war zone hospital 'hit'

 Sri Lankan government forces have shelled a hospital inside the conflict zone killing at least 49 people, Tamil Tiger rebel and hospital sources say.

The rebels said the makeshift hospital in Mullivaikal was hit early in the morning, but a government spokesman denied knowledge of the incident.

Pope visits Jerusalem holy sites

 Pope Benedict XVI has been visiting sites in Jerusalem holy to Muslims, Jews and Christians on the second day of his visit to the Holy Land.

He visited the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem, becoming the first pontiff to see the site, and then the Western Wall, one of Judaism's holiest places.

US troops 'killed by colleague'

Pope condemns denial of Holocaust

 Pope Benedict XVI has said the suffering of Holocaust victims must never be denied as he visited the Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial in Jerusalem.

"May the names of these victims never perish. May their suffering never be denied, belittled or forgotten," he said in the midst of survivors.

UN mourns Sri Lanka 'bloodbath'

SRI LANKAThe United Nations has described the situation in northern Sri Lanka as a "bloodbath" after reports of heavy civilian casualties at the weekend.

Tadić: Serbia will continue to cooperate

BramercBELGRADE -- President Boris Tadić said in talks with Hague Chief Prosecutor Serge Brammertz that Serbia will continue to fully cooperate with the Hague Tribunal.

“Tadić reminded that Serbia has extradited 44 indictees for war crimes and stated that our country is intensively working on locating the remaining indictees,” the President’s press office stated.

Serbia, EIB sign deal worth EUR 250mn

DjelicBELGRADE -- The government has signed a loan agreement with the European Investment Ban (EIB) worth EUR 250mn, for small and medium-sized enterprises.

The agreement includes the founding and activities of the bank's regional office in Serbia. Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration Božidar Đelić signed this agreement with EIB Vice-President Dario Scannapieco.

Kragujevac hunger strike drama ends

Serbs asked to return to Kosovo police

PRIŠTINA -- Kosovo police, KPS, Director Sermet Ahmeti has called on all Serb policemen who were suspended to return to their duties.

Ahmeti said that he had sent a letter to every Serb who left "after the independence proclamation", demanding that they return to police and announcing that their "privileges" would end unless they did so.

"I wish to remind you that we are determined and under obligation to respect the deadlines from the ministry of the interior's decision, which means that after these deadlines have expired we will be forced to terminate your employment," the letter says.

 
Croatian war criminal is in Bosnia

GlavasZAGREB -- According to Croatian police, Branimir Glavaš is currently in the territory of the Muslim-Croat Federation entity in Bosnia.

A statement from Croatia's MUP late on Saturday also said that "there is no legal basis to arrest Glavaš", and reminds that there was also "no legal basis to limit his movement", since he is a member of the Croatian parliament and enjoys appropriate immunity.
