Steinhauers to file new charges in Kovačević case
Tuesday, 12 May 2009

KovacevicBryan Steinhauer’s family, unhappy with the USD 1mn paid to them by Serbia, will be filing additional charges against Miladin Kovačević, says a Belgrade daily.

Shortly after the payment from Belgrade, the family filed new claims in New York for damages of a material and non-material nature not only for Bryan Steinhauer himself, the victim of Kovačević’s alleged assault, but also for his parents Richard and Marlene.

All three signed the lawsuit, which demands compensation for Bryan’s bodily injuries, and his “lifelong inability to receive full-time employment,” as well as medical expenses and mental anguish.

The family’s lawyers stated that the parents of the student had suffered greatly because of their son’s situation.

“There was great uncertainty whether he would survive the injuries, especially since the instability to Bryan’s health is permanent,” the family stated.

Those familiar with the American court system and similar cases believe that the sums of money in this case could be astronomical, coming to at least several million dollars, though the Steinhauers have yet to state how much they will be seeking.

According to the daily, this time, Kovačević will not be the only one to be cited, and any new suit would include Kovačević’s acquaintances, Sanel Softic and Edin Dzubura, who also participated in the fight, as well as the managers of the club where the fight broke out.

Sources said that the club could also be sued for serving Kovačević alcohol when he was 20 years old, which is illegal since the legal drinking age in America is 21.

A source close to the family lawyers told the daily that an indictment had already been served to the Kovačević family, who are currently at their family home in Kula. However, they were not available for comment.
